Our Story.

What do we do?

UVK aims to provide digital and in-person programming for Black 2SLGBTQ+ youth of Kingston (aged between 15-25) through monthly community gatherings that focus on wellness.

We do this through social arts-based activities and facilitated conversations on identity and belonging.

As Black queer and trans youth continue to be underserved while experiencing racism, homophobia and transphobia, this program aims to interrupt the factors that negatively impact the mental health of Black queer and trans youth. Some of the factors include isolation, lack of resources, and lack of culturally relevant programming.

This program will center joy and interdependent community building. Our intention is that each session will be led by a Black subject matter expert, artist, mental health professional (with preference to those who are also 2SLGBTQ+), and co-facilitator. The co-facilitator will be a Black queer and/or trans youth to support the peer-led creation of the space.

The main goal of UltraViolet Kingston is to cultivate a space for youth participants to learn, connect with their peers, Black 2SLGBTQ+ elders, and knowledge holders, and reflect meaningfully on their experiences and available resources.
