We make our own luck in this world.
"Do Black people live here?" This was something we would hear again and again in Kingston. What could we do to find our people? And what could we do to keep growing a visible and dependable connection to each other?
In 2018, Black Luck Collective became the answer to these questions: a space for Black people, by Black people where nurturing Black life is at our core.
How do we operate?
The collective is a flat organization without hierarchy. This means that all members have the opportunity and latitude to take on different levels of involvement, investment and responsibility in the decisions, projects, and partnerships we do, as well as any events we stage and collaborate on and attend.
We use WhatsApp for our members use to chat, share resources, and ask questions that we can't get anywhere else in the city.
One of the biggest things we do each year is work on annual Black History/Futures Month events in Kingston.
Why Black Luck?
Any and all the work that our community does for Black life in Kingston, we know if not for the Black people, it otherwise would not happen. For too long, Black people living in Kingston have been overlooked, creating the perception that the city lacks an enduring and vibrant Black community. We are dispelling that myth - particularly for the Black people living here. Our collective aim is to build and sustain an active community of thriving Black people and families here.
There is no luck to what we do, and how we live. We dream it, and make it happen for ourselves! We make our own luck.
